Yes, I'm a Reader

I love to read. In my opinion, there is nothing better than diving into a new book. You know how some people believe that there is a pill for everything? Well, when I'm feeling some kind of way, I believe that there is a book out there than can help me. Unfortunately, many of the people in my "real-life" circle do not share my enthusiasm when it comes to books. In fact, I always find it odd when someone says to me, "I'm not a reader." What? How can you not be a reader?

So, I was inspired by our own LadyLee to join a local book club where I can get together with women who do share my love of the written word. The first book that I'll be reading with the group is:

Baking Cakes in Kigali by Gaile Parkin

Here's a summary:

This gloriously written tale—set in modern-day Rwanda—introduces one of the most singular and engaging characters in recent fiction: Angel Tungaraza—mother, cake baker, keeper of secrets—a woman living on the edge of chaos, finding ways to transform lives, weave magic, and create hope amid the madness swirling all around her.

In Kigali, Angel runs a bustling business: baking cakes for all occasions—cakes filled with vibrant color, buttery richness, and, most of all, a sense of hope only Angel can deliver.…A CIA agent’s wife seeks the perfect holiday cake but walks away with something far sweeter…a former boy-soldier orders an engagement cake, then, between sips of tea, shares an enthralling story…weary human rights workers…lovesick limo drivers. Amid this cacophony of native tongues, love affairs, and confessions, Angel’s kitchen is an oasis where people tell their secrets, where hope abounds and help awaits.

In this unlikely place, in the heart of Rwanda, unexpected things are beginning to happen: A most unusual wedding is planned…a heartbreaking mystery—involving Angel’s own family—unravels…and extraordinary connections are being made among the men and women who have tasted Angel’s beautiful cakes…as a chain of events unfolds that will change Angel’s life—and the lives ofthose around her—in the most astonishing ways.

Sounds interesting. I'm excited and looking forward to diving in.

This looks like an interesting read. I have a blog radio show about books and I think I'm going to suggest this one to my cohosts.

I have the same problem with my circle of friends..."no readers". I don't understand how they can function...reading books is such a huge part of ME.

This book sounds intriguing.

Stopping by from SITS. Have a great day!!!

Aw Oldgirl... that sounds like a GREAT book. Very original!

Some of my book club sistas read 2 or 3 books a week! They take the term "AVID reader" to some other level that I will never reach!

I know you'll enjoy the book club. It is always nice to get different perspectives. This book sounds good. I'm interested in your thoughts. I may recommend it to my peeps, since I haven't been all gung-ho about our book selections lately...
