Nostalgia

I haven’t been a real basketball fan in years. So the question begs to be answered: Why was I up until midnight watching Game 1 of the NBA finals last night?

It was an accident really. I was downstairs in the living room reading my bookclub pick and enjoying a glass of wine. It was a little after eight o’clock so I decided to put the book down and clean up the kitchen and head upstairs to do some journaling. At 8:30 I put down my journal and turned on the television for the background noise.

And suddenly it was 1984 again. Celtics vs Lakers. I was back in Boston in my third floor apartment surrounded by a bunch of other Laker fans watching the game. Did you get that? In Boston, surrounded by Laker fans. I was a student at Northeastern University, we all were. All living in Boston and hating the Celtics. Except for Andre – he was from Massachusetts and the lone Celtic fan in the room. He really enjoyed rubbing it in our faces when the Celtics won the series. It was all about Magic and Bird back then. Now … well, I’m not a huge fan of Kobe but that kid can play so I won’t hate. I’m a basketball fan. Always have been.

So I stayed up last night and watched the game and I now I’m all nostalgic. All the excitement came rushing back. I think I’ll watch Game 2 in a sports bar …

That was a good game. I never was a Boston fan growing up, but I kind of dig them now. Meanwhile, I'm still kinda rooting for the Lakers. Really, I'm torn. If I had my druthers, I wanted the Magic to still be in the hunt. I like Dwight Howard. He seems to be a good guy.

On the flip side, I don't know what it is about Kobe, but most people don't like him. Maybe it had to do with him getting Shaq booted off the team.

Either way, I hope it goes to seven games.

Isn't that nostalgic feeling great? The sports bar sounds like fun.

The nostalgic basketball game for me would be 1994 Phoenix Suns vs. the Chicago Bulls in the playoffs!(I was born and raised in Phoenix and it was quite a big deal!)
