There is no greater joy than being able to witness your child’s success.
On Wednesday night my son and I traveled to my daughter’s college campus (more on the road trip later) because she was competing in a pageant to become Miss Zeta Psi of Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity. When she first told me she was competing I was a bit surprised. Up until this point, she hadn’t really shown much interest in the goings on of her campus. She had her eye on one thing and that was to pledge a certain sorority. She seemed excited about the chance to compete in the pageant though. One thing she said to me was, “I’m not doing this, just to be doing it – I want to win.” I heard that. If you’re going to spend time and money on a thing you may as well go for the gold. This girl was not playing. She hit a few bumps in the road during her preparation and a few times I thought she may quit, but she dusted herself off and continued to march.
She had to prepare a skit that incorporated her major. There was a talent segment and a question and answer segment. Five girls were competing and during the talent portion, two girls did spoken word, one did a dance, one did a song and dance and my daughter sang.At the end, one of the fraternity members began announcing the runners-up. Fourth runner up was called and my heart started pounding. Third runner up was called and I stopped breathing. Second runner up was called and I knew she had it in the bag. I felt kinda bad for the first runner up because she didn’t even get announced. After the second runner up he said, “and the new 2014-2015 Miss Zeta Psi is …” and I heard my baby’s name and that was all she wrote.
What an amazing night. On the way home, my son and I kept repeating over and over, "She won!"
It was almost worth my son getting a speeding ticket on the way up there. We were less than 5 minutes from the school and he got pulled over for doing 47 in a 35. Ugh! I was going to drive my car but he offered to drive – I’m assuming so he could control the music. He just got a new sub-woofer installed in his car earlier that day. So on the ride up I got to listen to a lot of loud inappropriate music. One song in particular had a hook that says: These Hoes Ain’t Loyal.
Wow. I hate modern music
