Buckle Up

I don’t watch a lot of television.  In fact, I turned off my cable last year because I’m not home that often and for the most part almost everything on television sucks.

Almost everything.

You see, there are a few shows that I must watch.  They are, in no particular order
The Walking Dead
This Is Us
Queen Sugar

There are also a few programs on Hulu and Netflix that I watch but they are in a different category.  I’m a diehard Walking Dead fan and will continue to be.  This is Us and Queen Sugar are beautifully produced, written and performed and always manage to get me all in my feelings.  Both shows are in their second seasons and each week I’m right there.  Now, since I don’t have cable I watch the episodes on the following day through other means (mind ya business).  Since I have to wait a day I try to stay off social media so I can avoid any spoilers.  I was unsuccessful this week with Queen Sugar.

Nova and Calvin
If you don’t watch the show, you may just want to skip this part.  Nova (Rutina Wesley) is one of the main characters and she is a strong, beautiful Black woman who lives to fight for and protect her people.  Black people.  In the first season she was involved in a relationship with a married, white police officer, Calvin (Greg Vaughan).  By the end of the first season the affair had ended.

In this week’s episode Calvin shows up again and Twitter was all abuzz.  People were all kinds of happy because they felt that Calvin was Nova’s “true love” and “their chemistry is real” and blah blah blah.

Okay, I know this is a television show and these characters are fictional.  I get that.  However, I am emotionally invested which is a testament to how good this show is.  That being said, I was not one of the happy people cheering on this reunion between Nova and Calvin and I was kind of pissed off when I sat down on my couch to watch the episode.  F*ck Calvin.   In my mind, regardless of their feelings for each other and how good they were together there is no way in hell that he can understand her and the things that are important to her.  Why?  Because he’s not Black.  And he’s a cop.  Period.  She deals with the mistreatment of Black people by the cops on a daily.  How can she come home and talk to him about that?

Him:  I never stopped you from talking about it.
Her:  You also never asked about it.

I watched the episode and I breathed a sigh of relief (at least with their storyline) because she said as much to Calvin and sent him on his way.  Race is not the only issue here.  It goes way beyond that.  At their core they are just too different, in my opinion, and the obstacles are just too great and let's not forget ... he's married.

Hey, I believe interracial relationships can work.  Just not this one.
